Artist Bio: Lio
Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in 1981, Lio moved to White Rock, British Columbia, at a young age. However, it was after surviving cancer at the age of 21 that his life took a transformative turn. Seeking solace and renewal, Lio found his paradise in Hawaii, where he discovered the power of surfing on the iconic big waves of the North Shore. It was there, immersed in the rhythm of nature, that his passion for art and painting emerged.
“Surfing teaches you to be a part of nature, and it’s then you can see the inherent values it possesses,” Lio explains. This connection to the natural world is at the heart of his art, inspiring his vibrant and deeply textured works.
Lio primarily works with acrylic on canvas, blending abstract and realistic elements in what has been described as “abstract realism.” His art is known for its innate color relationships, bold gestures, and layered compositions that reveal realism from afar but dissolve into intricate chaos when observed up close. Through his use of watercolor underlays, Lio creates tonal balances that serve as the living foundation of his works, infusing them with depth and vitality.
Lio’s paintings explore themes of nature’s harmony and raw energy, translating his experiences into visual stories that resonate on a personal and universal level. His gallery prints are hand-signed, reflecting his commitment to authenticity and artistic integrity.
